My parents, who are both in the audience, actually eloped to M.I.T. I was raised by very strict Chinese immigrant parents, who came to the United States in 1960 to attend graduate school. I believe there are many ways of being a good parent. I do not believe that Chinese parenting is superior. The Wall Street Journal excerpted some portions from the opening under the headline, “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior.” I must have said this a thousand times: I did not choose or ever see that headline until I opened up the newspaper, and I do not agree with it. Much of the intense reaction to my book has been based on a misunderstanding.
